All Happy Families Are Alike - An International Film Series

Still Walking (Japan, 2008)

When two siblings and their spouses and children return to their parents’ home for their annual gathering in memory of their dead older brother, long buried tensions and resentments rise to the surface as the one remaining son bristles under being constantly compared to his brother and being judged for marrying a single mother.

Still Walking was written and directed by Hirozaku Kore-eda, who based the characters on his own family. Kore-eda would later win the Palme D’or at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Shoplifters, which would also be nominated for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards.
