April’s film will be from the 50s: 12 Angry Men
12 Angry Men is a 1957 American courtroom drama directed by Sidney Lumet and adapted from Reginald Rose’s teleplay. The film follows twelve male jurors tasked with deciding the fate of a teenage boy accused of murdering his father, a verdict that could result in the death penalty. What initially appears to be an open-and-shut case begins to unravel when one juror, played by Henry Fonda, calls for careful discussion before delivering a guilty verdict. Confined almost entirely to a sweltering jury room, the film unfolds through intense debate, clashing personalities, and the gradual exposure of prejudice, assumptions, and reasonable doubt. As tempers flare and alliances shift, the jurors are forced to confront not only the evidence but their own moral responsibilities. Renowned for its tightly focused storytelling, powerful performances, and relentless tension, 12 Angry Men stands as a cinematic classic that champions the principles of justice, critical thinking, and the courage of a single voice to challenge the majority.
