The Third Man (1949)
When an American pulp novelist arrives in Allied-occupied Vienna shortly after the end of World War II, he finds that the old friend who had invited him there has been killed in a sudden accident. However, when he begins inquiring as to how his friend died, he finds that some witnesses state two men moved the body, while others claim to have seen…a third man. As he continues his search, he finds himself pulled into a web of intrigue in the post-war Viennese underworld.
Directed by Carol Reed and starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard, and Orson Welles, The Third Man’s original story and screenplay was written by the acclaimed British novelist Graham Greene and would later be voted by the British Film Institute as the greatest British film ever made.
All’s Welles That Ends Welles – A Film Series
In honor of Orson Welles’ 111th birthday, three classic films featuring the legendary actor, director, writer, and producer: first, perhaps the single most critically acclaimed film of all time; then a film noir voted by the British Film Institute as the greatest British film of all time; and ending with yet another all-time classic film noir, infamously mangled by studio meddling and only restored to be in line with Welles’ vision after he had been dead for over a decade.
